Welcome to the 8th International Symposium On Cucurbits-2027

Dilla University, in partnership with the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) and the Ethiopian Society of Horticultural Science (ESHS), is honored to host the 8th International Symposium on Cucurbits, scheduled for November 16, 2027 to November 18, 2027. Theme: "CUCURBITS FOR BETTER LIVES: SCIENCE, INNOVATION, AND SUSTAINABILITY". The symposium aims to foster sustainable advancements in the cucurbit industry by linking innovative cultivation practices with improved nutrition and consumer well-being.

Biography

Professor Ferdinando Branca is a distinguished agronomist, horticultural scientist, and full professor of Vegetable and Flower Crops with extensive expertise in crop productivity, plant biodiversity, and genetic resource conservation. His research focuses on the characterization, improvement, and sustainable utilization of cultivated and wild vegetable germplasm, particularly Brassicaceae species, integrating agronomy, plant science, food quality, ethnobotany, and molecular approaches to support agricultural innovation. As an internationally recognized leader in vegetable crop research and coordinator of major international initiatives, he has contributed significantly to breeding resilient and sustainable production systems, publishing more than 200 scientific papers and advancing the conservation and utilization of plant genetic resources worldwide.

Dr. Alemu Dessa Derebe is an agricultural researcher specializing in plant stress physiology, crop physiology, and sustainable agricultural production systems. His research focuses on understanding plant responses to environmental stresses, particularly salinity and other abiotic factors, through physiological and ecophysiological approaches including photosynthesis and chlorophyll fluorescence analysis. He is committed to developing climate-resilient crop production strategies that enhance agricultural productivity, environmental sustainability, and food security in diverse agro-ecological conditions, with a particular emphasis on coffee and other economically important crops in Ethiopia.

Submission Guidelines

Abstract Requirements

  • Only abstracts submitted in English will be reviewed.
  • Abstracts must not exceed 300 words.
  • Abstracts must not contain tables, pictures or graphs.
  • All abbreviations must be spelled out on first use.
  • Abstracts should be thoroughly checked for spelling and grammar.

Abstract Submission Charge

  • An abstract submission charge is due upon submission of an abstract and applies to the presenting author only.
  • For ISHS Individual members, the abstract submission charge is fully waived.
  • No ISHS account yet? Create an ISHS user account.
  • After payment and activation of your user account, you can start your abstract submission.

Important Submission Rules

  • Abstracts must always be submitted by the presenting author using their own ISHS user account.
  • Submitting on behalf of another author is strictly prohibited.
  • Abstracts must be submitted by May 30, 2027 for consideration by the Scientific Committee.
  • Authors will be notified of provisional acceptance by June 10, 2027.

Acta Horticulturae Manuscript

  • All oral presenters must submit a manuscript for Acta Horticulturae by August 30, 2027 (guidelines).
  • Optional: submit to ISHS Scientific Journal eJHS instead (peer-reviewed).
  • Failure to submit may result in being refused the floor for oral presentation.
  • Poster authors are strongly encouraged to submit a manuscript.

Registration & Presentation Requirements

  • Presenting authors of accepted abstracts must register for the symposium by October 30, 2027.
  • Failing to register will result in withdrawal of your abstract and manuscript from the symposium proceedings.
  • Failing to present (oral/poster) will also result in withdrawal of your manuscript.

ISHS Young Minds Awards

  • Best Oral Presentation – junior scientist who is presenter & first author.
  • Best Poster – junior scientist who is first author.
